Great insight. We are brought up to wait to be noticed and it doesn't work in corporate. You have to advocate for yourself and ask for what you want. And that means knowing what you want in the first place.
Spot on, Bette. I think we will naturally gravitate to people who share the same values as us. And they tend to become our best supporters over time. It's not simply competence but also, values, worldview and some commonalities in general. What do you think?
I think sometimes you need to form allies in the workplace if you want to move up with people that may not always completely align with your world views. At least that's been my observation.
I never belonged in Corporate - because I was a 'rule follower'. Still am to some degree. I found it hard in my earlier years to break or challenge any rules. It wasn't until I felt more sure of my skills and abilities that I started asking questions that challenged - and that move got me fired. Ha! Life is funny, ain't it?
I wrote it by my personal experience and the heat waves i faced because I was very naive to understand the political dynamics..but slowly I understood it. I don't participate nor encourage in office politics but it's not the choice, it exists everywhere you can't always play by book and make everyone happy unless I'm selling ice cream ..But I understand it and build required gatekeeping that's all..you have to have your escape route or just avoid it, if possible
Master or perish. Well said. Not many people like to hear this. They think it is unethical. Not at all. If you want to grow, you have to understand how to navigate office politics. You don’t need to do it, you just need to understand it!

I think one of the most important aspects is to build allies. But you have to nurture the right ones.

Thank you for sharing your story, Susan. Wow, you are right. Not everything is in our control.

Building the required gatekeeping is all we need to learn. We need to understand office politics so we don't step on landmines. Thank you Myalya!
